About me

STORY OF BARB

I’m a photographer and documentary director based in Lillehammer, Norway. I’ve studied creative documentary directing at the Norwegian Film School and fine arts photography at the Academy of Arts Architecture and Design in Prague.

In 2014 I exhibited at the National Art Exhibition in Norway (Høstutstillingen). Now I mostly work with documentaries both as a director and cinematographer.

Being trained as “one-woman-one-camera”, I’m used to working independently, capturing both sound and image, and thinking about editing while on set.

As a director, it’s important to me to create a sense of connection and a safe space for the people in front of the camera to open up. As a cinematographer, I’m interested in capturing feelings, atmosphere, and a sense of poetry in the ordinary. In my filmmaking, it’s important to me to capture a nerve and authenticity. While striving for perfection, I find beauty in the glitches and gravitate towards the documentaries that are visually strong, but not completely polished.

Although living in a small town, I work all over Norway and have been filming several projects internationally. I'm orginally Czech, and speak both Norwegian, Czech and English, as well as basic Spanish and Nepali.

I also a kayak on white water, ski, bike, hike and in general love playing in the outdoors. Being able to combine extreme sports with film making and photography is something I really enjoy. I thrive in bad wather, and being able to embrace the uncertain or uncomfortable is something I also do in documentary filmmaking.

In addition to filming, I also operate a drone, and own an FX6 camera and sound equipment.

Currently I’m working on my own feature length documentary, but I love to work on other’s projects and shoter assignments in between the long term work. If you have a project and would like to collaborate, I'd love to hear from you!
